Hello Ashland, this is your wake up call. For anyone who doesn't know, Ott is seriously a WIZARD of a producer of some the finest electronic music out there. Lush, soulful, melodic, this is not your daddy's four on the floor duff duff. It is a huge treat to have him come.

That being said, please spread the word. Stillwater is working hard to bring top notch acts to our town, and it is vital that we support their efforts if we would like to see it continue. If you can't make it, then get someone else to go. They won't be dissaponted.

So curious friends, hello!

Finally some word from Heartsong! I hope this finds all of you full of health and vitality!

Where to begin and what to say have delayed this communication for days. As the King said to Alice in Through the Looking Glass, "Begin at the beginning, when you come to the end, stop."

I don't think we adequately explained ourselves in the last newsletter. In fact, I think it was downright confusing. Sorry about that, we didn't have a full grasp on the situation and this made it a challenge to communicate. As you all know, we Heartsingers love what we do and our brews have been gaining momentum and growing sales at a crazy pace! So to be closing in the midst of expansion just didn't seem right.

But it was certainly pending. Sales were steadily growing but we had fallen behind on our monthly bills. In July Heartsong didn't make payroll. There was nothing left to do but close. Proactively we sent word out through this newsletter and a press release. The Chai Hut closed on August 1. August was our grace period: we kept the CSA pick-up going at the Chai Hut and kept our products in distribution. We continued to engage our allies and actively seek working capital. We agreed that our Playa Hydration Project at Burning Man 2008 was important. It felt so crucial that we all volunteered the month's work. Heartsong's fate would be decided based on how August panned out.

Burning Man:
Many people have expressed confusion and dismay over our choice to go to Burning Man while our company's future was so uncertain. It has come up enough that I address it here.

For me, it's the project itself: The opportunity to hydrate thousands of thirsty folks. To introduce the Pepper Brews in a place they can truly be appreciated. This year, I got to brew and serve chai in a sacred manner. I got to test new brews on random, lovely people. I got to work in cooperation with thousands of people to create and give and celebrate. I got to camp out with, travel with, perform with the people I work with: The Heartsingers. I got to do what I do best. And I'll tell ya, after the past two years of building both Chai Hut and factory, launching the brews and the cafe, I had forgotten what I love to do. The August grace period was the ultimate test. It restored my passion.

Second, Heartsong was invited to be the tea service at Black Rock City's temple this year. Not alongside the temple or near it or serving just the crew (all of which we have done and enjoyed in the past) but this year we were invited to serve our tea in the temple. The temple was envisioned, built and designed by an entire crew of course. But the "artist" of the project is a man named Shrine. Shrine takes garbage and turns it into sacred space. In 2007 we met once. I was setting up the goddess and he literally charged me, grabbing me by the shoulders to tell me with excitement that every temple he builds is for tea. He said that his temples always feel empty to him until the tea is served. Turns out that Shrine is so passionate about the tea that he has traditionally done the tea service himself. So when I heard that Shrine had been awarded the Temple in 2008, I thought that's what would happen. But instead he called me up and he said, "I love what you do. I love all the brews you make. I love how you express the art, I love everything about it! I want you to be the tea at the temple. I want you to come to Oakland and build tea temples with me."

What an honor! All of us felt this to be an incredible opportunity for Heartsong. Serving at the temple allowed us to represent Heartsong in its highest form. It would introduce our brews to thousands of people. And if we were going to go out of business, it offered us one last opportunity to fulfill Heartong's mission of Raising the Vibration of the Nation through Hydration! Serendipitously, this year's Burning Man theme was "The American Dream."

Black Rock City is a place of manifestation and magic. Built by the most activated, forward thinking people I've ever encountered. Together, we create a city out of nothing. In this city, dreams are made and dreams are tested. In this way, it seemed a perfect place for Heartsong and the Heartsingers to spend our "grace period." Especially considering that wealthy entrepreneurs fund the city's construction, we would be serving them and what we need is an investor. It is not uncommon for a playa project to cost $150,000 to $200,000 (the same amount of money we are looking for) and for that project to be burned to the ground by the end of the week. So we figured that it was worth a shot to go out there, do our thing and do it well. Besides, what could be more thirst quenching than a Heartsong Pepper Brew in the dust and heat?

So we donated our time, the brewing, the freezing, the transport and the serving of the teas and we appealed to our fellow citizens to sponsor the ingredients. People were generous with the Playa Hydration Project and we gave away a lot of tea!

We served the temple crew and city builders for nearly three weeks while they were building. When the event began, we served the public. We set up the goddess at Burners Without Borders and served the main drag of the city, the Esplanade, every afternoon. From the teacarts we built with Shrine, we served the temple every day from 5 to sunset. Neal and me brewed and served chai in two ceremonies at the temple. Enhanced by the organic coconut milk, generously donated by the fabulous folks from Larry & Luna's Coconut Bliss, Heartsong Chai flowed freely for hours. We served Wednesday into Thursday from 11 PM to 11 AM and we served the Temple on Temple Burn Day (Sunday) from Sunrise to Sunset. Then we burned the temple (see picture above), packed up and came home.

While we made incredible connections, we did not come home with that magic immediate investor. So Chad, needing an immediate source of income to support himself, was forced to make some big decisions and moved to Portland where there is much more opportunity than Ashland. And I went back to see what was left of Heartsong, what our grace period offered and what forward movement might look like.

Our products have been out of stock for two weeks and people are really missing the brews. People want Heartsong back. Allies have paid forward the necessary ingredients to run another round, so Neal and I will brew this week. The Oregonian ran an article mentioning Heartsong's challenges. It stirred up a few conversations. Others were stimulated locally through an article in the Ashland Daily Tidings. We are currently applying for an expansion loan through Whole Foods Market. This process will take several months but is a good possibility for Heartsong.

Then, in the last possible moment, the Green Beverage Company of Oakland, Ca. approached with a fascinating offer. They are launching a product line of bottled beverages and need a co-packer. On Sept. 25 they return to the Chai Hut for a trial run. If the tea flows smoothly a partnership with them will facilitate our ability to keep the Chai Hut, our equipment and our jobs.

Establishing a symbiotic relationship with the GBC while receiving an infusion of working capital for October puts Heartsong products back on the market. GBC's contribution to production's overhead brings us to break-even almost immediately. And though we've definitely lost some momentum, I have been in open communication with vendors and customers alike. Should we take a path forward, I hope they will be forgiving. If we can pay our leases this month, these companies will continue to work with us and I think we've got a shot here.

The outpouring of love and faith and passion for Heartsong in the past several weeks has been truly incredible to receive. Thank you all! We all know that no matter what, Heartsong will continue to exist in the hearts and minds of so many people as a revolutionary, other worldly, next level company that produced some of the best brews in the Pacific Northwest. It has been a great honor to serve you in this way and we hope the Heartsong Brews are ever flowing your direction!

Local Business Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company to Close Doors

The Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company, located in Ashland at 2220 Ashland Street, is very sad to announce that it will be closing, after only eight and a half years in business in the Rogue Valley. Heartsong is an herbal micro-brewery, providing hand-crafted chai and their unique Pepper Brew beverages from Chico, CA to Seattle, WA, and employs local residents and youth.

Heartsong Chai began in Ashland, in 2000, brewing chai, a spicy tea, at night in Evo’s Java House. It was met with great fanfare by the Ashland community and one of the original founders decided to make a real business of it. Elizabeth Bretko, known to countless as the “Chai Mama,” bought a house in Jacksonville and converted her 12x13 square-foot detached garage into a certified commercial kitchen.

In 2003, Heartsong Pepper Brews were developed. Beginning with the Habanero Honey Brew, a kind spicy lemonade sweetened with local honey from the Wild Bee Honey Farm in White City or Queen Bee Apiaries in Corvallis, offered as an all-natural alternative to caffeine energy drinks. The concept is that hot peppers provide an endorphin rush, giving a person energy without the caffeine crash.

In 2004, Heartsong then began doing business as the Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company. Chad Derosier, known to many as “The Chai Guy,” joined Heartsong and helped to make the business grow, securing distribution in Eugene and then shortly after in Portland. The Habanero Honey Brew, and second Pepper Brew, Thai Dragon Tonic, proved to be a success and demand quickly outgrew the rate of production that only two people could do from such a small space. It was time grow and build their own brewery.

In the spring of 2006, Heartsong signed a lease to take over an abandoned Pizza Hut building, remodeling it and naming it the Chai Hut “A Food Artisan’s Gallery and Café.” They purchased two large kettles, a boiler, a 4-head filling machine, a capper and a labeling machine, allowing them the ability to produce 325 gallons per batch. They introduced a third Pepper Brew, the Mate Fire, purchasing yerba mate from locally owned Eco Teas and they hired several local people.

Heartsong began to grow rapidly, securing large-ticket accounts like New Seasons Markets in Portland, and PCC Markets in Seattle, WA and a few Whole Foods stores. At this point, while having grown the company grass-roots with very little investment, bills began to pile up as sales still did not meet the new overhead costs.

Through over a year of seeking investment from various individuals, groups and companies, Heartsong came up dry. Deep conversations were had with the local Daedalus Foundation but the relationship went sour and they left Heartsong out in the cold. Last week, Heartsong made the decision to close the operation of their business, a difficult decision when the factory is newly launched and sales are growing.

On August first, the Chai Hut will close the doors for their café operations. If people would still like to purchase “Love Jugs,” 64-ounce glass bottles of their chai or Pepper Brews, or chai spice blend boxes the Chai Hut will remain open on Thursdays through September for the Siskiyou Sustainable Cooperative CSA pick-up. Heartsong Chai Hut Presents Happy Hour Music Series

Join Heartsong Chai Hut Food and Artisans Cafe and the Siskiyou Sustainable Cooperative
for a summertime series of live music, delicious drinks and good company.

The Heartsong Chai Hut is hosting a Summertime Happy Hour Music Series. Drinks will be
specially priced from 5:00 – 7:00 pm and customers will be treated to live music and
samples of handcrafted chai, spicy pepper brews and nutritious recipes made from Siskiyou
Coop farm fresh produce. This event is for the whole family and is a terrific way to wind
down a hot summer day.

Each show begins at 5:00 pm and ends at 7:00 pm and is free. July 3rd features the
acoustic country music of Atrix Wolfe. On July 10th, Scott Blair will perform for the
first hour, followed by Girl With Guitar. Trever Jones, folk roots musician will play on
July 17th. July 24th will feature Pete Herzog and his acoustic political folk. On July
31st, local country punk band Bike Tramp will play.

The Heartsong Chai Hut is located in Ashland at 2220 Ashland Street, near Shop N’ Kart.
Stop by to sip any of our spicy pepper brews or handcrafted chai drinks, purchase
Heartsong products, or to check out the other Oregon food artisans and crafters featured

I just can't resist throwing parties at the chai hut. but you see, technically, we are a micro-brewery and that's very different from being a party place.
this is why we are so forward about the chai hut being alcohol free! we been wanting things to be real chill as we been skating some thin ice with the city...

as many of you know, i tend not to ask permission to do things that must be done. all our party advertising says, "The Chai Hut is alcohol free * Please choose not to booze * Community = all ages". that's me offering the community a place to gather and get down, in exchange for $7 and a night off the sauce.

each time we've had a party, the police have surfed the parking lot. but they have never had any reason to approach the building and thus we have been blessed with the opportunity to dance till six in the morning! this time, someone/s left beer bottles sitting outside their car, which motivated the police to check us out. this prompted a call to the fire department, which opened up several occupancy issues and a deadline for compliance. in other words, a big can o worms.

thanks to all of you who prayed for us while you boogied, you are powerful miracle workers! our brush with the authorities has been facilitated by you to be easy and auspicious. i am grateful.

to those of you drinking that night, that didn't do it at the Chai Hut, discretion is a high form of respect. thanks for showing it.

to those who didn't, what the fuck ever. i was freezing my ass off outside, playing 20 questions with the cops, while ana sia and danny corn were slayin' it.... totally sucky. to know you were inside oblivious and groovin' is....bittersweet. most assuredly, the next party will be a private one.

Dear Friends~

2007 has been a big year for the Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company. We moved from the Jacksonville brewery to the Chai Hut in Ashland. We opened the Chai Hut Food Artisans Gallery and Café. We introduced our third Pepper Brew, the Mate Fire. We created “The Goddess” our traveling tea bar. And we built our factory. Meanwhile, we continued serving the regions of Portland, Eugene and Ashland by brewing on the stove in ten-gallon batches and bottling by hand.

We moved to the Chai Hut with one goal: to increase production. But as soon as we moved in, Ashland people began to ask for a teahouse. In response to this demand, the Chai Hut has become a friendly teahouse that promotes organic foods, employs local people, hosts live music, sponsors community meetings, participates in youth internship programs and gives tours.

Our greatest accomplishment this year was the launch of our manufacturing facility. Gone are the days of hand filling and capping every bottle! We now brew in 100-gallon batches and bottle with an automatic filler and capper. With consistent, big batch production, the Heartsong crew is now focused on sales. In December Heartsong products were picked up by Northwest Natural Foods, a Eugene based distributor whose niche is Oregon natural foods. With the help of Northwest Naturals, our products are now available in Bend, Mt. Shasta and at Whole Foods in Portland.

In the past year we’ve invested heavily into our infrastructure with an eye toward creating a long lasting, profitable local business. These investments have not been free, and we find ourselves in the difficult position of having to reconcile our short-term expenses while our sales numbers catch up with our new capacity. Rather than trying to get expensive loans from multinational banking conglomerates to fill this gap, we turn to you, our community to help us through.

We hope to find 100 people who are willing to offer short-term loans of at least $100. We will use this money carefully as working capital, to purchase ingredients and pay bills. We welcome loans with a one-year pay back and we gratefully welcome gifts also. Success in this fund raising campaign will empower Heartsong to expand sales through consistent production. First Heartsong Brews saturate Portland. Second, sales expand to Seattle. Third, we douse San Francisco.

The people of the Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company are both thrilled and grateful to make good tea to for the people of Oregon and beyond. yo ya'll! we're closing on sundays to give us more time to brew and to take some days off...... it's a great day to rent the building for your own fascinating gathering...ya know: mama's group, book club... birthday celebration..... the werks!

meanwhile, our new hours are Wed. through Sat from 12 noon to 7 pm.... we'll be open most mornings too, call first or bang on the door (don't break the glass).....

also, we'd love to be doing some friday and sat evening stuff, say 7-11 pm..... any ideas?

AND we've added live music to our saturdays from 4-6.... if you want to play, schedule with michael.... if you want to listen, come on by, it's free to get in and its been real fun so far. we've got some good stuff upcoming also.....

there's a rumor of the next party being dec. 14. i haven't gotten an official confirmation from the head hanchos at el gordo sound... my people are trying to schedule a luncheon with their people to work out the details and sign the contract.... see? but if the rumors are true, you might wanna shine up your dancin' shoes!

Indian Water Bearer....

A Water Bearer in India had two large pots; each hung on each end of a pole, which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, and while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the master's house, the cracked pot arrived only half full....

For a full two years this went on daily, with the Bearer delivering only one and a half pots of water to his master's house.

Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect to the end for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do. After two years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the Water Bearer one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you."

"Why?" asked the Bearer. "What are you ashamed of?"

"I have been able for these past two years to deliver only half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your master's house. Because of my flaws, you have to do all of this work and you don't get full value for your efforts," said the pot.

The Water Bearer felt sorry for the old cracked pot, and in his compassion he said, "As we return to the master's house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path." As they went up the hill, the old cracked pot took notice of the sun warming the beautiful wildflowers on the side of the path, and this cheered him up some. But at the end of the trail, he still felt bad because it had leaked out half of its load, and so again the pot apologized to the Water Bearer for its failure.

The Bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice there were flowers only on your side of the path, not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always know about your flaw and took advantage of it. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day as we walked home from the stream, you watered them. For two years I have been able to pick beautiful flowers to decorate my master's table. Without you being the way you are, he would not have had this beauty to grace his house."

Each of us has our own flaws. We are all cracked pots. Nothing goes to waste. Don't be afraid of your flaws. Acknowledge them, and you too can be the cause of beauty. Know that in our weakness, we find our strength.

This Saturday we're servin' at Troon Vineyards for their annual harvest event, "Saving the World with Words & Wine" from 12-4 pm.

Wed. Oct 31 we're servin' at On Air in Portland for Rabbit in the Moon.... should be spooky, loud and supa fun!

Fri. Nov 2 we're celebrating the Day of the Dead. First, of course, we'll be servin' at the Bohemia Gallery for First Friday Art Walk, then we'll be servin' in the graveyard at the end of the Day of the Dead Procession and then we'll be servin' at the Chai Hut for Lava Machete and Novatron...

Nov. 10 we serve at the Havurah Temple on Mountain St for their annual auction, which is always a stellar event!

Nov 16, 17 & 18 we'll be servin' and sellin' at the Give Green Holiday Fesitval in Portland, a project of the fabulous ReDirect Guide. The festival is at the Doubletree Lloyd Center.

Help wanted: Chai Hut Remodel this weekend!

So the question is this: do YOU want a new public venue in town and if so are you willing to put some energy into it's creation?

We're moving some walls to make some more space in the Chai Hut. This will expand our occupancy from 46 to 100 peeps..... making it a viable place for music and celebration.

my hope is that there are some local folks that want this to happen and would be willing to work with us this weekend. Help with mudding, priming, painting on Saturday night and Sunday would be the bomb diggity!

If you are down, lemme know, with a buncha peeps it will be real fun!

News update on this gig.

First, the lineup!

Second, tickets!

Tickets will be on sale at the Armory Show only. Due to fire code limitations at the Chai Hut, there will only be 45 tickets sold. Not one more. We just learned our occupancy limitations last week and in this case, must respect the law. SO! In order to make this whole shindig viable, tickets will be sold for $10 each. That's an increase of $5 bucks from my last post. i apologize for this but since we are limited to 45 people and we have ta help our musicians travel and eat, an pay the electric billz an such..... $10 a pop is what is.

the cool thing is that this will be an unforgettable and intimate gathering!

Third, Chai Hut Remodel!

There are some things, demolition and construction type of things, that could open the Chai Hut to more people for parties like this. We heartsongians have invested hella hours, effort and dollars into creating this space. if this community feels a strong need for a new public gathering space in the form of the Chai Hut, now is the time to help us out. we can increase the occupancy of the building to 100, but we'll have to move some walls and stuff..... tribe me direct if you have the ability and desire to accomplish this mission. We are in need of tools, labor and cash to make these changes.

Anyhoo.... gratitude to Miz Jody Starfish who is working full tilt on this event, give her a whoop whoop, folks! Thanks for bringin action to Ashland, lady!

Don't forget about the TuTu Tuesday Happy Noon Hour and Fungineers Pep Rally at the Chai Hut that day, noon to one, tu tu's encouraged!

less than 24 hours after we moved the last big piece of equipment out of the jacksonville brewery, home of heartsong for four years, pipes in the ceiling froze, burst and destroyed the kitchen. water flowed through all four walls, freezing in giant icicles on the outside of the building. that kitchen held serious space for heartsong production and now, the earth elements have deemed its work as a kitchen, complete.

Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company Celebrates Grand Opening of Chai Hut

The Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company is proud to announce the Grand Opening of their new location, “The Chai Hut”, on Saturday, October 21st, 2006 from 4-10 pm. The Chai Hut is located in Ashland, at exit 14 and houses Heartsong's offices, retail store, and herbal tea microbrewery.

Upon the retreat of Pizza Hut from Ashland, this building sat empty for a year until the brave souls of the Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company took over the lease in May. “We were so proud of Ashland when the Pizza Hut and McDonald’s went out of business,” Says Chai Mama Elizabeth Bretko, “And we’re thrilled that local businesses like Heartsong and Premier West are taking their place.”

After several months of hard work, the Hut reclamation is complete. All of the grease and cheese has been cleansed from the building and the gum and soda have been scrubbed from the walls. Heartsong’s office and store are active and the space finally smells like chai!
Heartsong began when founder Elizabeth Bretko began brewing in the borrowed kitchen of Evo’s Java House in the year 2000. In 2003, she converted the garage at her home in Jacksonville into a commercial kitchen. This is where Heartsong products are currently produced.

Heartsong Chai became the Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company in 2004 with the release of the Habanero Honey Brew. “We call it a pepper brew; a tea that’s brewed with hot peppers, lemons and honey,” explains Chad Derosier, the Chai Guy. “The lemons offer electrolytes to the body while the peppers stimulate an endorphin rush. The result is an energizing, thirst quenching experience.” In January 2006, Heartsong unleashed a second pepper brew, the Thai Dragon Tonic. “The TDT,” says Derosier, “is a unique concoction of limes, kiwis and hot peppers. It offers an alternative to the Haby Brew, as it’s not as spicy and sweeter. I can’t stop drinking it.”

Heartsong currently produces the two pepper brews, four flavors of chai and a line of certified organic loose tea blends. Heartsong products are available along the I-5 corridor from Mt. Shasta, CA to Portland, OR in stores, restaurants and cafes.

Sample all Heartsong brews at the open house style Grand Opening from 4-10 PM on Saturday October 21 at 2220 Ashland Street in Ashland, Oregon. People are invited to tour the brewery, shop in the new Heartsong store, and enter a raffle to win fabulous prizes. Dj’s Aaron from the Ashland Food Co-op and Brett from Tibet will be spinning ambient grooves throughout the night.

Well, it's on….

It’s official….

It’s amazing…..

On May 1st, Heartsong signed a lease to take over an abandoned pizza hut in Ashland. So, after a three year hiatus, Heartsong will be moving it’s production to Ashland, where it all began, only this time in our own space rather than the kitchen of evo’s. We’ll be moving from a 13 x 15 square foot space in the Chai Mama’s backyard to a certified brewery of 2000 square feet. We hope to be open as soon as possible. In fact, I’m going to go buy some stuff today to begin cleaning and prepping on Sunday. The fun never stops…

Looking for space to put up small dome

hello there!

i am looking for a big backyard in ashland with some privacy, or farmland on the outskirts of town to put up my brand new 16 foot diameter dome to live in. this structure is under 200 square feet, and so is legal to have within ashland city limits with no permits.

i have a 5 1/2 year old daughter who is great. we are low impact, environmentally and health conscious, community minded, hardworking, and responsible. it would be wonderful to manifest a situation in which there were other children or families nearby. i have lived off the grid for many years and we would be mostly self sufficient. i would love to do work trade or pay cash for this space. skills i have to offer are massage therapy, yoga instruction, childcare, housecleaning, gardening, yard work, etc.

As I awake on this christmas morning with my blood realatives here on the east side, and can't help but reach my heart out to my kindred spirit family on the west side. I miss my morning cup of chai at Evo's. I'm living in Maui now and thinking about starting a Galactictivation tea house here...a place for people to connect and come together to inspire and ignite our creative spirits with music, art, healing and... of course chai is one of the elixers to facilitate the vibe. But wheres the chai? :P Theres simply not enough chai on this island. And simply no Heartsong Chai at all. What can I do about this dilemna? Would you consider expanding your market to Hawaii?
